# Train the Trainer: Trauma and Suicide Awareness

> Prepare your internal trainers to deliver Trauma Awareness Foundation and Suicide Awareness for the Workplace safely and consistently. Over two practical days, trainers learn to hold emotionally heavy content, respond to disclosure in the room and run scenarios well, then deliver an observed micro-teach with feedback.

## Overview

Organisations that bring trauma and suicide awareness training in-house need trainers who can do more than present slides. This content can stir up personal experiences for learners and for trainers. Trainers need to keep the room safe, respond well when someone discloses, and follow safe messaging, while still keeping the session on track and on time.

This programme prepares internal trainers, L&D professionals, wellbeing leads and experienced peer supporters to deliver both courses in their own organisation. Day 1 focuses on safety: facilitating heavy content, safeguarding in the room, handling disclosure and safe messaging. Day 2 focuses on delivery: adult learning design, running scenarios and paired practice, quality assurance and evaluation. Every trainer then delivers an observed micro-teach and receives structured feedback.

The programme is delivered face to face by two facilitators, because the safeguarding practice and the micro-teach need to be observed in the room. Content is aligned with BS 30480 Suicide and the workplace, including its guidance on commissioning suicide prevention training, the UCL competences for self-harm and suicide awareness and prevention training, NICE guideline NG116 on post-traumatic stress disorder and Samaritans media guidelines on safe messaging. Trainers leave with a signed-off micro-teach and a plan for their first sessions.

## Frequently asked questions

**What will trainers be able to deliver after the course?**

Trainers will be ready to deliver Trauma Awareness Foundation and Suicide Awareness for the Workplace in their own organisation. Arrangements for using Xcademia course materials in-house are agreed with each organisation before the programme.

**Why is this programme face to face only?**

Safe delivery of this content is a practical skill. Facilitators need to observe how trainers handle distress, disclosure and scenarios in the room, and the micro-teach is assessed in person.

**Do trainers need a clinical or counselling background?**

No. The courses are awareness training. Trainers need facilitation experience, sound judgement and clear escalation routes, which this programme builds.

**What if a trainee trainer finds the content difficult?**

There are two facilitators throughout, a quiet space is available and anyone can step out at any time. We also cover how trainers look after themselves and where to get support.

**What happens if a micro-teach is not ready for sign-off?**

The trainer receives clear written feedback and an action plan. A further observed session can be arranged once they are ready.
